What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. The bone fuses tightly around the implant in a process called osseointegration, which provides a strong and stable base for artificial replacement teeth. Dental implant posts can anchor single-tooth restorations or support various full-arch restorations to replace multiple or all missing teeth.

Types of Dental Implants

Single-Tooth Implants

Single-tooth implants involve placing one implant post in the jawbone to replace the root of one missing tooth and support a dental crown. Single-tooth implants help prevent bone loss at the site of the missing tooth and restore your smile with a natural-looking and feeling prosthetic tooth.

Multi-Tooth Implants

Multi-tooth implants provide a fixed solution to replace multiple missing teeth in a row. The dental bridge is firmly secured to the implants for optimal stability and comfort.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Patients missing all or most of their teeth can have a set of implant-supported dentures (overdentures) for a comfortable, secure solution. Implant-supported dentures involve placing four to six implant posts along the jaw that securely hold a custom full or partial denture. Overdentures provide superior stability and function compared to traditional dentures.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process involves several steps over six to eight months to replace missing teeth with permanent tooth restorations.

Consultation

The process begins with an initial dental exam and consultation to determine if you’re a candidate for dental implants. X-rays and scans are taken of the jawbone to evaluate bone quantity and quality at the implant sites. Your desired restoration is also discussed to develop a customized treatment plan.

Implant Surgery

After you’re deemed a suitable candidate, the implant posts are surgically placed into the jawbone during an outpatient procedure. Dr. Yenchesky will numb the area to minimize any discomfort. The titanium posts fuse with the jawbone over the next several months.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the healing process in which the jawbone grows around the implanted post to hold it firmly in place. This critical bone fusion typically takes three to six months in the lower jaw and four to six months in the upper jaw. Temporary restorations can protect your implant site as you heal.

Finalizing Restoration

Once the implants have fully integrated with the bone, we’ll design custom artificial teeth and precisely attach them to the posts. From a single crown to a full-arch prosthetic, the custom restoration offers a natural, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outcome.

Candidates For the Dental Implant Process

To be eligible for dental implants, patients must be in good general and oral health. You also need sufficient bone in the jaw to properly place the implant posts. Ideal candidates include:

  • Non-smokers
  • Individuals with healthy gums and no signs of periodontal disease
  • Patients with adequate jawbone density and volume
  • Those with the ability to properly maintain oral hygiene
  • People missing one or more teeth due to injury, decay, or other causes
  • Certain conditions like chronic illnesses or bruxism may compromise implant success

Schedule a consultation with our Green Bay dentist, Dr. Yenchesky, to determine if you’re a good candidate.

Dental Implant Aftercare

Dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. To ensure the long-term success of your implants, it’s essential to:

  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene with daily brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings
  • Avoid damaging oral habits like chewing ice or hard foods
  • Schedule regular dental visits for exams and cleanings
  • Promptly treat any gum disease to prevent bone loss around implants
