Most of us don’t give our toothbrush a lot of thought. We brush our teeth (hopefully at least twice each day!), put the toothbrush away, and go about our day. But as De Pere top dentist, Dr. Chad Yenchensky, will tell you, we need to pay a bit of attention to our toothbrush to ensure it contributes to our good oral health.

Tips for Taking Proper Care of Your Toothbrush

  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, although more aggressive brushers might want to replace it more frequently. You should be able to tell by looking at the bristles on your brush. When they start to look frayed, it’s time for a new one.
  • Most of us learned this as kids, but it bears repeating: Don’t share your toothbrush with anyone—even a close family member. Passing infection between users is inevitable with this practice. This tip is crucial for those who might have compromised immune systems.
  • Store your toothbrush in the open air, in an upright position; don’t cover it up or store it in a closed container where the brush might stay damp. This gives the brush a chance to dry out between uses and helps prevent bacteria from forming. If you store your brush along with other family members’ brushes, keep the brushes separate to avoid cross-contamination between brushes.
